Both come off properly with a soft wash rather than pressure, and on a treed lot the deck is often the half of the job that actually needed doing.

On wood it tears the soft grain out from between the harder rings and leaves the furred look you cannot undo. Neither is a risk worth taking on a house, and neither is necessary, because the growth is alive and killing it works better than hitting it.

A soft wash kills the growth rather than knocking the top off it, so it does not come straight back, but shade and damp are exactly the conditions algae wants and your property supplies both permanently. Most treed lots here run a two to three year cycle on the house and shorter on the deck. An open lot in a subdivision can go four or five.
