Half the village is behind trees. A roofline that looks perfect from the driveway can be invisible from the road, which is where most of the people who see it are standing. So the design starts with what actually reads from out front, and that is usually not more light along the eaves. Our own place is in the village, and the picture on our main Christmas page is that house.

Midhurst lots came with the pines already on them. That is most of why people move here and it is the single thing that decides what a Christmas display should be. A mature white pine or a forty-year-old maple standing between the house and the road does not care how neatly the eaves are done. From the pavement you see branches.
The fix is not more roofline. It is moving part of the budget to where the sightline actually is: the trunks nearest the drive, the walk up to the door, the porch itself. A pair of wrapped trunks and a lit path is a display you can see from the road on a night when a perfect roofline is behind a branch.
The newer builds on the edges of the village have the opposite problem. Nothing planted yet, nothing to hide behind and nothing to wrap, so the whole display has to come off the architecture: roofline, gable peak, pillars, railings. Two houses a kilometre apart, two completely different quotes, and neither is wrong.

One number, every time. Lights, design, install, in-season repairs, January takedown and storage until next winter. No takedown invoice in the new year and no travel charge, which on a village five minutes from home would be difficult to justify.

The practical part of that is December. Everybody says they will come back if a strand goes out. When the job is in the village it is a five-minute drive instead of a scheduled trip, and that usually means the same evening rather than the following week.
Midhurst is not one type of house. These are the three shapes the village keeps producing, and where the design goes in each.
Two-storey on a wide treed lot with mature pines across the front. The roofline on its own would have sat behind the branches from the road, so the design put warm white on the eaves and gable and then wrapped the two trunks nearest the drive. The trees are what you see first now, and the house reads behind them.
Older village bungalow, low roof, deep front yard. Straightforward roof and garage return, plus the shrubs along the walk picked out. One of the quicker jobs in the village and the sort that costs less than people expect.
Newer build with a steep front gable and no mature trees yet. The opposite problem: nothing to hide behind and nothing to wrap, so the whole display is architecture. Roofline, gable peak, pillars and porch railings, which on a house this shape is plenty.
Light day is a ladder day. If the gutters need doing before freeze-up or the glass has not been touched since spring, doing it on the same visit saves a second trip and gets it all done before anyone arrives for the holidays.

Most of the village lands between $650 and $1,400 for the season. A bungalow with the front roofline and a couple of shrubs is $400 to $600. The two-storeys off Doran Road and Finlay Mill Road with a garage return and some porch work are $650 to $900. Once a wrapped tree or two goes in, which is where most Midhurst lots end up, it is $900 to $1,400. One number covers the lights, the design, the install, any repairs during the season, takedown in January and storage until next winter.
Yes, but not by doing more roofline. If a stand of mature pines sits between your eaves and the road, another run along the gutter goes behind the branches and nobody sees it. The lots here do far better when part of the budget goes into the trees and the front of the property instead. A pair of wrapped trunks and a lit walk reads from the road on a night when the roofline does not.
We wrap trunks and the lower limbs, not whole mature evergreens. Nobody in this county is safely lighting the top of a sixty-foot white pine on a residential job, and anyone who says they will is either quoting something else or has not seen the tree. Wrapped trunks up to a sensible working height look excellent and are what most people picture anyway.
September or early October. Installs run from late October to the first week of December in booking order. Midhurst books up sooner than its size suggests, partly because the village talks to itself and partly because we live here and neighbours ask early.
No, and there is nothing to charge for. There is no travel fee anywhere in Simcoe County on any of our services, and the village is a few minutes from home.

No. Everything is clipped, never stapled, screwed or nailed. Clips are made for the edge of a shingle or the lip of a gutter, they come off in January with the lights, and there is nothing left behind in the spring. If you have older aluminium eaves or fascia we will look at them on the design walkthrough before anything goes up.
Not for the lights themselves. It matters for where we put a ladder and for driving on the lawn, which we do not do. A lot of the older village properties have a septic bed across the front, and knowing where it is before install day is the sort of thing we would rather ask about on the walkthrough than find out on the day.
