What do professionals use to clean windows without streaks?

Everybody has done the same thing at least once. You spray the glass, wipe it with paper towel, step back, and the whole window is a smear of streaks that looks worse than before you started. So you spray again, wipe harder, and it is still streaky. It is not you. It is the tools and the water. Here is what the pros actually use, and why it works.

The short answer: pure water and a squeegee, not a spray bottle and a rag

Two things cause streaks. The first is what you are wiping with. Paper towel and cloth rags leave lint and push a thin film of cleaner around instead of removing it. The second, and the bigger one, is the water itself. Regular tap water is full of dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. When that water dries on the glass, the minerals stay behind as spots and a faint haze. You can wipe forever and you are just moving those minerals around.

Professionals get around both problems in one of two ways depending on the window.

For most windows: a water-fed pole and pure water

The tool you have probably seen us using is a long pole with a brush on the end, hooked up to a tank. That tank runs the water through a filtration system that strips out the minerals, which is called deionized or pure water. Pure water has nothing dissolved in it, so it dries with nothing left behind. No spots, no film, no streaks.

The way it works is simple. The brush scrubs the dirt loose, and then we rinse the glass with the pure water and just walk away. There is no wiping and no drying. The water sheets off and dries clear on its own. That is the part that surprises people. The trick to a streak-free finish is not a better wiping technique, it is water that has nothing in it to leave a mark.

The pole also reaches up to three storeys from the ground, which means we clean second and third-floor glass with both feet planted instead of balancing on a ladder. Safer for us, and no ladder leaning against your siding.

For the up-close finish: a squeegee, done right

Inside the house, or on ground-floor glass where we want that hand-finished look, we use a squeegee. Not a spray bottle and a rag. A proper squeegee with a sharp rubber blade, a bit of clean solution, and a technique that matters more than the tool.

If you want to do your own, here is what actually stops the streaks:

• Use a squeegee, not paper towel. This is the single biggest change. Paper towel cannot beat a rubber blade.
• Wet the whole window first with a little dish soap in water, so the squeegee glides instead of skipping.
• Wipe the blade after every pull with a clean, lint-free cloth. A dirty blade re-deposits everything you just removed.
• Pull in overlapping strokes, top to bottom or side to side, and finish the edges with a dry microfibre, not paper.
• Do it on a cloudy day or in shade. Direct sun dries the solution before you can squeegee it, and that flash-drying is a streak factory.

Why tap water and blue cleaner let you down

The classic combo, a bottle of blue cleaner and a roll of paper towel, fails for the reasons above. The cleaner has additives that streak, the paper towel leaves lint, and the tap water you rinsed with left minerals behind. On a small mirror it is fine. On a whole window in the afternoon sun, it never looks clean.

There is one more thing tap water does over time. Around Barrie and across Simcoe County the water carries moderate calcium, so sprinkler spray, dog spray, and dishwasher steam off the kitchen window slowly build up a white mineral stain. A normal clean takes off the fresh stuff, but years of buildup needs a separate hard-water treatment. That is not a streak, it is etching, and no amount of squeegee technique clears it.

The honest takeaway

If you want to do your own, drop the paper towel and get a squeegee, wet the glass first, keep the blade clean, and work out of direct sun. You will get a dramatically better result.
